Step 1 – Make Your Card Base
Start with a 8.5×11 inch piece of white cardstock and place it on a scoring board with the 11 inch edge at the top.
Next, score your cardstock at 5.5 inches and use a paper cutter to cut the sheet apart along the scored line.
Then place the one half back on your scoreboard, this time with the 8.5 inch side at the top.
Score the cardstock at 4.25 inches and fold your card along the score line.
Step 2 – Create Your Soda Can and Straw
First, stamp your soda can and straw in black ink on watercolor paper.
Next, color your can using the watercolor technique. Start with the lightest yellow and color the can entirely, following the curves of the stamped image as you make your strokes.
Continue coloring, using progressively darker yellows and oranges until the outer edges of the can are the darkest and the center is the lightest.
Then go in with gray and watercolor the tab and mouth of the can.
Lastly, color the straw with the darkest orange. Allow the pieces to dry before moving on.
Step 3 – Cut Out Your Die Cut Elements
After your watercolor has dried, place the stamped watercolor paper on your cutting plates.
Then tape your cutting dies over the images, add your top plate, and run it through your Sizzix machine.
Next, remove the cut items and paper. Now place your teal paper on the cutting plates and tape the honeycombs cutting die on the bottom right corner of the paper.
Be sure to leave a small border between the cutting die edge and the paper edge. Then add your top plate and run it through your machine.
Remove the cutting die from the paper and remove all of the small paper from it. Then repeat the process on the top left corner of the teal paper.
Make sure that the border between the cutting die and the paper edge are the same as the right bottom corner.
Step 4 – Stamp and Assemble Your Soda Can
First, align the “MOM” and “You Crushed It” stamps on your acrylic block as you want them to appear on your can.
Then stamp it in black ink on the center of your colored soda can.
Finally, carefully cut open the mouth of your can and slip the straw into the slit.
Step 5 – Assemble Your Card Front
Attach your die cut teal paper, centered, on the front of your card with liquid glue.
Next, attach 2 lengths of pink ribbon diagonally across your card roughly 1 inch from the edges of the die cut corners. Use a glue runner to adhere them and then trim the excess off of the edges so that they are flush with the card edges.
Lastly, flip over your soda can and straw.
Place an adhesive foam square to the part where the straw meets to hold it in place. Then add 2-3 more adhesive foam squares.
Remove the paper backings and attach your can to the center of your card front at an angle.
Optional: Add a little bling to the card front by attaching gems.
Step 6 – Finish Inside of Card
Cut a rectangle of pink cardstock that is about 3×4 inches.
Next, attach it to the inside right flap of the card.
Finish by aligning “Happy”, “Mother’s”, and “Day” stamps on your acrylic block. Then stamp centered on your pink cardstock in black ink.
Tips and Tricks
- See the watercolor process for the soda can in my video here: Soda Crushed It Mother’s Day Card
- You can use a glue runner to attach your teal cardstock but I like to use liquid glue because it has more give for repositioning if needed.
