If you already bought a basic sewing kit then you already have one of the tools listed below. Believe it or not, it was years (like 15+ years) before I had any idea that the kits came with a threading tool.

That definitely could have saved me some frustration. There are times when you are fixing clothes and use the extra thread that came with them so that you get the exact match. Over time, that little piece of thread starts to fray, making it super difficult to thread a needle without a tool.

How to Use a Manual Threading Tool

Have you ever noticed that weird little tool that comes with every basic sewing kit? It looks like a small coin with a wire diamond attached to the end.

That is a manual threading tool and this is how to use it.

How to Thread a Needle Using an Automatic Threading Tool

An automatic threading tool isn’t electronic. Instead, it is a tool that pulls the thread through the eye of your needle for you.

It looks a little confusing but I promise, it is also very simple to use.

Step 1

First, place your needle into the small hole in the top of the automatic threader with the needle’s eye pointed down.

Step 2

Then push the button on the threader to make sure it is lined up correctly with the eye. If the small hook comes through, then it is placed correctly.

Step 5

Lastly, grab your needle and one piece of thread that is through the eye and pull it the rest of the way out of your automatic needle threader.

How to Thread a Needle without a Tool

Of course, you don’t have to use a tool at all to thread your needle. A tool is useful when the eye of your needle is exceptionally small or if you thread is fraying.

To thread a needle without a tool, simply cut your piece of thread and poke it through the eye of the needle. Done!
