I absolutely love this heart. When I saw the tissue paper at the dollar store I knew I had to have it and make something with it.
This Valentine heart is so much better than I had envisioned. It’s definitely my new favorite piece of Valentine’s decor!
It’s super easy to make your own with this step-by-step tutorial, too.
Materials for Colorful Valentine Heart décor
Hanging Wood Heart Sign with Metal Word (I found mine at Dollar Tree)
Glossy Mod Podge
XActo Knife
Confetti Assortment of Tissue Paper
1 inch Foam Brush
Scissors
Teal Cording
Fringe Yellow Yarn
Step 1
First, carefully pull the metal word off of your sign. After you get it off, pull any of the excess paper off of the glue spots.
Step 2
Next, peel the paper covering off of the front of the sign. I found that it comes off very easily but an XActo knife was helpful to get it started. Make sure you get all of the covering off.
Step 3
Once your paper covering is off, use your scissors to cut off the rope hanger as well. You won’t be using it later.
Step 4
After your wood heart has all of the elements removed, coat it with a layer of Mod Podge.
Step 5
Next, cover the Mod Podge with a sheet of white tissue paper. Go over the tissue paper with your foam brush to smooth it down into the Mod Podge.
Then trim the excess tissue paper from the edges with your XActo knife.
Step 6
Continue adding layers of Mod Podge and white tissue paper until your heart is white instead of brown.
Step 7
Lastly, add one more coat of Mod Podge and then cover your heart with a sheet of the confetti tissue paper. Again, be sure to smooth it down with your foam brush and trim the excess from the edges. Then set it aside to dry completely before moving on.
Step 8
After your heart is completely dry, poke holes through the tissue paper where they are in the wood heart. You can use your XActo knife to do this or you can simply poke a pen through (which is what I did).
Step 9
Next, cut a length of your teal cording according to how low your want your heart to hang. For example, a shorter length like the rope that came attached to it is great for hanging on the wall or if you use a wreath hanger on the door.
Step 10
Then thread each loose end of your length of cord through the holes in your heart. Then flip it over and knot each end in the back so that they cannot pull through the holes when you hang it.
Step 11
After your cording is attached, hot glue your yellow fringe yarn around the edges of your heart.
Be sure that the cording is hanging towards the center of your heart so that you don’t accidentally hot glue your yellow yarn over it.
Once your heart edges are covered, trim any excess yarn from the end.
Step 12
Lastly, reattach your metal word with hot glue. I simply put it in the same places it was originally and pressed it firmly into the center of the heart.
Tips and Tricks
If you plan to hang your heart where it will be exposed to the elements, I recommend sealing your heart with a spray sealant after step 8. This will help protect it for outdoor use.
You can also paint your heart white instead of layering with the tissue paper if you have white paint on hand. I simply used the tissue paper because it was already in the set. As long as your heart is white before placing your confetti tissue paper on, it doesn’t matter which way you choose.
Although this is not necessary for an awesome piece of décor, I did sand the edges of my heart after the Mod Podge had dried to make the edges of the paper neater before hot gluing my yarn. This is completely optional.
I seriously love how this colorful Valentine heart décor turned out. It’s so fun and colorful which is a nice change from the traditional Valentine’s colors.
